3rd Annual Halloween Contest: Two-Sentence Horror Stories

creepyIt’s that time of year again! No Halloween on Creative Commoners would be complete without our listeners submitting their creepy creations for one of our spooky writing challenges.

This year, we’re taking a riff from Reddit and asking people to submit horror stories that are a mere two sentences long. Here is one chilling example of what you can do in this format:

I begin tucking him into bed and he tells me, “Daddy check for monsters under my bed.” I look underneath for his amusement and see him, another him, under the bed, staring back at me quivering and whispering, “Daddy there’s somebody on my bed.” – justAnotherMuffledVo

You can read more in this short io9 article. Essentially, it’s all about the brevity here.

Contest, you say?

But we’re also doing things a little differently than in years past. This year, it’s not merely a writing challenge, but a CONTEST! Each of you who submits a story will be entered into a drawing to win your very own deck of Story Forge Cards, a $25 value!

Story Forge is a deck of 88 cards that is a powerful brainstorming tool for novelists, screenwriters, playwrights, and game masters. We consider them a most invaluable tool in the creative toolbox. Already have a deck of these wonderful cards? Story Forge makes a wonderful gift!

The other prize in the drawing will be a signed copy of Allison’s debut novel STRINGS, which will also include a custom made bookmark! You can read all about the book here.

So here are the rules

1. Each story can only be one to two sentences long. These are to be proper sentences with proper punctuation (correct usage of semi-colons, dashes, and commas will be looked upon with great admiration). Huge run-on paragraphs will not be considered. In other words, keep to the spirit of the entries posted in the above linked articles.

2. Got more than one story up your sleeves? Listeners can submit up to three separate stories. Not only that, each submission will count as an entry into the prize drawing. So if you submit three stories, that’s three times your name goes into the hat, increasing your odds of winning.

3. We will accept stories in text form, which will be read aloud on the show, or you may submit your own audio files. Additionally, entries will be posted in our Compendium.

4. We are only considering stories submitted via email. Please do not post them on our Facebook page and expect those to count as entries. In addition, please try not to stray into political and/or heavily religious topics. This is supposed to be FUN.

5.  Drawing for the winner will happen on air, October 31st, 2013, after which we will contact you for your mailing information so you can receive your Story Forge deck.

Deadline for entries is October 18th, 2013

If we end up with a LOT of entries, we may just give away TWO decks, so share this post and let’s make this thing super insane!

Send all your entries to creativecommoners@gmail.com

We look forward to your chilling tales!
